10 Safety Tips When Using an Electric Fireplace

Modern electric fireplaces are very convenient and easy to use. Compared to wood-burning or gas-fired fireplaces, an electric fireplace is much safer to utilize. Here the licensed residential electricians of Bailey & Shipp list some safety reminders for you to keep in mind.

Operating an electric fireplace can be done safely if you follow these ten safety tips:

  • When the electric fireplace is turned on, its surface becomes very hot. Steer away from heated surfaces to avoid burning yourself.

  • To reduce the chance of a fire, keep any combustible materials, such as furniture, clothes, bedding, pillows and drapes, at least three feet away from all sides of the electric device or unit.

  • Make certain that neither the fresh air intake nor the hot air discharge vents are obstructed. Air must be able to move freely.

  • Although most electric appliances with warmers are safe for children and pets, use them responsibly when operating near children or anyone with physical limitations, especially when the device is turned on and left unattended.

  • When not in use, make sure the fireplace is unplugged.

  • Never use an electric fireplace if it has a faulty socket or cord, or if the device appears to be malfunctioning or the heater has been dropped or damaged in any way. For electrical or mechanical changes, contact a trusted residential electrical repair contractor.

  • An electric fireplace should only be used indoors; never leave it outside or expose it to harmful elements.

  • Electric heaters shouldn’t be used in bathrooms, laundry rooms or other indoor locations where the unit may be exposed to water. Having water near electric devices is hazardous. Never install the heater in a location where it could unintentionally fall into water.

  • The unit’s wires or connection should never be run beneath furniture, carpeting or other appliances. Runners, throw rugs and similar materials shouldn’t be used to cover the cord. To prevent someone from tripping over it, the cord shouldn’t pass through areas with high foot traffic.

  • Turn off the fireplace and remove the plug from the socket or outlet before disconnecting the unit.
